In March, Colombia recorded a harvest of 944,000 bags of 60 kilos of coffee, 18 % more than the 800,000 bags produced in March of 2015. Between January and March of this year, it was recorded a production of nearly 3.2 million of sacks, 9 % more than the 2.9 million bags produced between January and March of 2015.
The volume of the harvest recorded this year includes the coffee produced in the last quarter of 2015 and the first months of 2016 but only came to the market in the last two months. It is estimated that begining in April, the effects of the intense phenomenon El Niño will be felt in the coffee production.
In the last 12 months (from April 2015 to March 2016), the coffee harvest exceeded 14.4 million bags, 17 % more than the 12.3 million bags harvested in the same period last year .
In the present crop year so far (from October 2015 to March 2016), the production was 7.3 million bags, 18 % more than the 6.2 million bags in the same period of last year.
In the context of El Niño, the Coffee Growers National Federation (FNC ) intensified control campaigns for the coffee borer beetle, which spread more easily in extended dry periods like the present one.
In March, exports of Colombian coffee were nearly 1.1 million of bags, 37 % more than the 786,000 bags exported in March of 2015.
This year so far, coffee exports reached almost 3.3 million bags, 13% more than the 2.9 million bags exported between January and March of 2015.
